no rules - no rulers

July 30, 2017

Finally, I am able to blog from my iPad while I am in Paducah.  Have been playing and sewing and here is what is on the wall..

If you didn't happen to see it on either Instagram or FB, here is a look, although it is just a top, and not quite finished.  I did bring a quilt with me, ready to stitch, but it is

much more fun to do the creative stuff.  I am teaching a class September 23-24 at Artistic Artifacts in Alexandria, VA on using ethnic fabrics in modern quilts, so I have been playing with ideas...

Don't you hate it when a piece of art has the title of Untitled?  I do.  Is that the actual TITLE or is it just a statement that the artist has no idea what the piece is about?    I would think that almost anything would be better: Blue Dots or  Yellow Line (even if there isn't one, it would give the viewer something to think about).  But it just isn't right to send a piece out into the world without a name.  How would you like it if you didn't have a name?

This o...

THURSDAY AFTERNOON, JULY 20:

I has been one of those "I've been busy but I haven't done anything" days.  At least, it seems that way.  To make matters worse, here I am blogging in the middle of the afternoon, feet up in my messy sewing room, when I should be doing something useful.

Here was my day (it did get more productive).

Slept late

And woke to see, with great relief, that the Viet Vets truck was in my driveway, hauling away the 12 or so bags of clothing, linens, toys, and what-all that I...

I'm excited to announce that my new book, Create Your Own Improv Quilts,  is ready for pre-order.  After two years of work and experimenting as I wrote (you'll see the good, the bad,and the ugly), the result is a fresh look at making modern quilts: my improv approach to a modern aesthetic.  You'll find the usual fun, relaxing way to work you're accustomed to if you have read Create Your Own Free-form Quilts.  And if you haven't read it, be prepared for some rule-breaking in this one, as...

Did I throw them away? Lose them? Take them apart? Throw the pieces into a box? Probably all of the above. I came upon a load of photos I took while I was experimenting over the past couple of years and thought you might want to see a few of my many trials and errors as I played with rectangles. These are audtions and I either go ahead with an idea, tuck it away for the future, or ditch it altogether.  In any case, it's good to have the photos to jog my memory.

No idea what became of this one.  Boo...

Both, depending on what time it is or what your point of view is.  Right now, bleary-eyed and mushy-brained because it is already Wednesday (technically) and I am still in my sewing room.

I'm finished with the quilt for Usha (Handloom Batik) and just have to put on a sleeve. That's tomorrow's job. Next up, putting a facing on this gray quilt that I reinvented from a butt-ugly block.  It has been sitting around for a year, waiting for me to be in the mood to do the boring part.

Then, I've been...

July 9, 2017

It has been a busy Saturday. We took ten more bags of books to donate to the College Women's Club book sale. They raise about $50,000 ever year for college scholarships and we've been going every Saturday morning for weeks. More to go.

Nearby, there is a fabulous farmer's market so Phil and I went over after dropping the books.  I could have bought everything in the place, but I don't have enough room in my fridge produce drawers.

I forgot to take pictures while we were there (actually, didn't have...

Vamoosed. Gone. Disappeared. Vanished.  Oh, well -- it wasn't that important and even though it is invisible today, you saw it yesterday (and left me comments, thank you:-). In case you missed it - here are the photos, at least.

Dishtowels and ice cream.

Along with the dishtowels, the top shelf of my linen closet was harboring several vintage quilt tops. Two of them are splendid - in mint condition - and I am going to sell them.  More when I am able to take better photos than I have.

In the meantime,...

I don't know about you, but I am very tired of hearing the noise of fireworks for the last four nights.  For some insane reason, the towns around here decided to do their fireworks starting Sunday night. Thunder? Gunshots? Nope -- fireworks!

'Nuff said.  I celebrated today by shredding bills and other stuff from the mid 2000s and then hauling up printed matter from the basement that I used in my other careers.

Fashion articles I wrote for a magazine when I was an image consultant (which you would n...

More or less.  A few times a year, when I can't see a horizontal surface, I start the clean-up process.  Yesterday was one of those times.  This cutting board may look messy to some people, but I forgot to take a picture earlier.  This is the halfway point of sorting through the piles and getting rid of the teensy bits. (well, at least some of them).

Now it is all cleaned up. Isn't that better?

Then there was the matter of the ironing space.

This took a little effort, but it was worth...
