A wonderful week in Brittany

I'm in London now, staying with my dear friends for a few days. Caught up on my sleep last night and am now ready to talk about my wonderful experience teaching at Clos de Lande Vallee in Pont-l'abbe. Since pictures are worth a thousand words, here are a few. The area is lovely. The food was divine, from start to finish. And our hosts, Apostolos and Anne (to his left) were totally charming. Then, there was the class.  Some of the participants had never before cut fabric without a ruler, but discovered that it wasn't so bad:-). Sally, for one, was thrilled with the result of her totally improvised, no-ruler piece. Everyone was busy making new work - and discoveries. We worked with rectangles

beautiful Brittany

I  am pretty much adjusting to the time difference of 6 heures  Il est 11:30 pm ici et je commence à avoir sommeil.

two quilt-related accomplishments

Accomplishment #1: I started to clean out the linen closet. That may not be a thrilling job, but it yielded an extraordinary discovery. A drop-dead gorgeous, mint-condition, hand-pieced 19th c quilt top. Where did it come from? I have no memory of having bought it (but I am sure I did). The browns, reds, and greens, are as bright as they day they were born because they were stored away from light. Just look at these beautiful fabrics! The gray mourning print -- the red one. Oh, my! If you look closely, you will see that some of the fabrics had been seamed from scraps. I think that today we hesitate to add to a piece of fabric that is slightly too small, but why???? It doesn't detract fr

a packed week

Packed and packing. Filling the suitcase with clothes, fabrics, and a few small quilts to take with me to Clos de Lande Vallée in Brittany, where I will be teaching for five days next week. The problem with packing ahead of time is that I can't remember whether I have already packed my rotary cutter, seam ripper, etc. etc. and now I have to rifle through my stuff to make sure. Sometimes I think it is not worth trying to be planful. It's really not my style. Emballé et emballant. Mettant des vêtements, des tissus, et quelques petits quilts à emporter en Bretagne,où je passerai cinq jours enseignant, la semaine prochaine, à Clos de Lande Vallée. Mais c'est un problème de remplir la valise une

Feet up!

My feet and the sewing machine's feet, as well. My bobbin is out of thread -- the signal that it is time to get away from the sewing machine for a day or two. I've been working on this quilt - stitching away (as you know, my least favorite part of the process) and am happy to have a break. But I really want to have it done before I teach my next class. We'll see. The day started with the shower door going off the track. I can't fix it and I contacted three people who do that kind of work and none of them called me back. oh joy. I spent the middle of the day in the garage, packing art supplies and moving crates and cartons around so we can put more stuff there. I gave away a perfectly goo

a change of scene

is always good for jump-starting creativity.  At least, I have found it so.  I've been in Paducah for less than a week and have been lucky enough to work in Helene's spacious studio, cutting, sewing, and putting pieces on the design wall A couple of days ago I posted a piece I made with triangles. It started as a couple of sample blocks for a class and ended as a complete top. Yesterday I decided to use up all the cuttings and triangle scraps to see what I could do with them.  Up on the wall tonight, the result. Not. layered and quilted yet, but It will go home with me tomorrow (Wed) and join the other two pieces waiting to be quilted. But first, I have to start another piece, which is a com
