Printing with Found Objects

As seen on HGTV's Simply Quilts, Rayna's methods for using found objects to print, stamp and screen.  You'll use textured items from around the house and hardware store to work spontaneously and print your own unique fabric to use in your next quilt..
All workshops take a playful, 'what if?' approach.  Participants are encouraged to use their intuition, to experiment, and to enjoy the results of "happy accidents."  Any can be combined for a 3-5 day experience or retreat.

Expand your options and carve stamps that reflect your design sense & personality!  Explore different effects of inking the block and various design possibilities. Combine with your other stamps and hear your fabric "sing."
Jump-Starting The Art Quilt
Level:  All levels

Day 1 
Creative exercises, mind-mapping, word association and play will lead you forward.  Working quickly with line, color and free-form design, you will follow your intuition and experiment with a number of small studies.
Day 2
Group discussion, brainstorming, "where do we go from here?" critique, and ample time to explore and play. Expand a small study,, continue working in a series, or try an idea you didn't have time for yesterday.  Leave class with a way to express your personal vision and the start of more new work.
Discover your own visual language and use a variety of image transfer methods, paints and mark-making tools to express yourself. We will explore text as a key element of design and find new ways to combine it with images to add meaning to your quilts.

Making Your Mark: layering text & images

Printing from Your Pantry

Using gelatin from your pantry, water-based inks, and your hands or a brayer, you'll discover a  fun and versatile way to print wonderful texture and detail on your fabrics.  Gelatin plate printing is addictive!
Thermofax Screen Printing Magic*

Type: screen printing
* must have Thermofax machine available or already made screens
Instant gratification using a Thermofax and black & white toner-based photocopies or laser prints.  You will make screens and begin printing immediately on fabric or wearables.  Screens last through numerous printings.

Spontaneous Strip Quilts
Level:  All levels
Length: 1 or 2 days
Type: piecing, design, sewing
Hide that ruler and make  a fabulous scrap quilt without a pattern.  Using only your rotary cutter and sewing machine, you'll cut strips, sew them together, slice 'em up and sew 'em again.  There are infinite ways to put together the pieces, for a quilt that is one in a million and a true original!  Bring your scraps, left over log cabin blocks and a sense of play.  Leave with a spontaneous strip quilt.
Tired of working from patterns?  Want to do original work  but not sure where to start?  Banish 'blank design wall" syndrome!  Spark ideas with creative, playful exercises.  Working quickly and spontaneously with scraps, you'll go home with  several small studies and multiple ideas for new work.  * Art quilts above started with found-object fabric printed in workshop above.
Easy as Pie Soy Wax Batik

Whether you're new to batik or want to switch to non-toxic soy wax,  you'll love this 21st century approach to an ancient art.  Soy wax, pigments, and household items are all you need to get started creating gorgeous fabric!  This method is so easy you can do it at home.  Come play with soy and get hooked!
